Do you have a story to tell?
We want to help you share it.

Call for Contributions

If you are a writer, researcher, poet, songwriter, biographer, chronicler, cultural knowledge keeper, or just someone with an interesting story to tell about the experiences of Indigenous, African American and/or Afro-Indigenous peoples in New England, this call for submissions is for you.

The Reimagining New England Histories: Historical Injustice, Sovereignty, and Freedom project–a joint venture between Brown University’s Ruth J. Simmons Center for the Study of Slavery and Justice, Williams College, and Mystic Seaport Museum–is now accepting submissions for an anthology chronicling the lives, perspectives, and experiences of  Indigenous, African American, and Afro-Indigenous persons in New England. This book project will have both print and digital formats to accommodate written, visual, and oral forms of knowledge sharing and storytelling.

Who can submit a proposal?

This call is for works that center the history and experiences of members of the  BIPOC community. Of particular interest are submissions that focus on persons of African American, Indigenous, and Afro-Indigenous descent. You do not have to be from or a resident of New England, but your piece should relate to New England history, culture, society, environment etc.

Will I get paid for this?

Yes! If your submission is selected you will receive an honoraria to compensate you for your time and effort. Moreover, one of the core ethical components of this project is that your own work belongs to you. Being included in this volume means that you are functionally lending your piece to the publication. You remain the owner of your work and you can continue to use and distribute your piece as you please. Contributors also have the option to be published anonymously.

How do I apply?

Please use the following links to share information about your submission. Please complete the form by June 30, 2023 for your piece to be considered for publication.
