About
This project is a collaborative project with Native tribes and African American communities within the region. It seeks to tell the complex plurality of histories in collaboration with these communities. In the language of conventional historiography the project is about telling a subaltern history of the making of New England paying great attention to the archives, oral memories and knowledges produced by these communities. This does not mean that members of this project will not consult the usual archives but will do so working against the grain. The overarching aim of the project is to present the various histories of the region but to do so from the perspective of those who were dominated.
This project is made possible by a grant from the Mellon Foundation’s Just Futures initiative.
